Wednesday Feb 23, 2011
Sunday 1.23.11 He who is not with me… Luke 11:14-28 Apathy where the testimony of God is concerned. Jesus paints a picture of two sides—God and evil. He then warns of which side you’re aligned. Verse 23 reads: “He who is not with me is against me, AND he who does not gather with me, scatters.” The apathy of the church towards the workings of God is an issue of crippling effect.

Sunday 1.9.11 Who is my neighbor? Luke 10:29-37 Apathy where loving God and others is concerned. Picking up from where we left off last week. That text in context in Luke’s gospel, the man immediately attempts to rationalize that command ‘Love God; love your neighbor.’ The apathy of the church in our culture: not likely cross the road to avoid getting involved, rather fail to see the man in need and step over him on our way.

Wednesday Feb 23, 2011
Sunday 1.30.11 Eat, drink and be merry! Luke 12:13-21 (ref. 22-34) Apathy towards things eternal. The contrast of temporal and eternal—what’s really important? What’s really lasting? What priorities matter? The parable/teaching deals with issues rampant in our culture and flooding into the church. The apathy of the church towards the lost and God’s kingdom’s advance is due largely to our occupation with self.

When You Pray...

Wednesday Feb 23, 2011
Sunday 1.16.11 When you pray… Luke 11:1-13 Apathy where prayer is concerned. In this parable Jesus tells a funny story. The lesson is to approach prayer with persistence, even in the face of resistance. Note especially the structure of verse 9 (present tense/future tense). The apathy of the church in our instant gratification culture… stands to undermine the spiritual value of persistent prayer and longing. In other words: I tried that and came away disappointed.
